Second, we aim to highlight what young people actively pursue regarding news, not merely their deviations from older groups. Evidence clearly indicates that young individuals consume extensive media and information, frequently through more varied and complex methods. Within an increasingly fragmented social media landscape – six online platforms (Newman et al. 2025b) now achieve over 10% weekly reach with news content, compared to merely two a decade ago – we observe that young people tend to utilize different and more numerous platforms. Their growing preference for audio and visual formats accompanies a desire for the intimacy and authenticity of personality-centered content. They also typically lead in experimenting with emerging technologies, such as AI, and demonstrate greater openness to its journalistic application. We emphasize certain opportunities and present instances of how media companies, both large and small, attempt to connect with these audiences through their preferred channels.
